I observed Mrs. Jenkins middle school 6th-8th grade AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) classes at Steward Middle School. It was a standard sized classroom composed of exceptional students (each student went through an interview process to be admitted in this course). Mrs. Jenkins set a positive tone for her classrooms and created a “family-like” environment for her students. The students were very engaged, often worked collaboratively in groups, and had a great relationship amongst each other and the teacher. The classroom was very student-centered and Mrs. Jenkins made it a priority to develop a healthy relationship with each of her students and their parents. She set aside time to interact with her students one on one while maintaining a quiet classroom. Her students trust her and respect her as a mother figure.
